Artwork Description:
A screaming cat, set against a field of orange, channels both humor and existential anxiety. The juxtaposition of the cat’s exaggerated expression with the vivid orange backdrop evokes absurdity and reveals the tension between comic relief and underlying distress. This interplay suggests that the humor serves as a mask for deeper unease, as the raspy yowl cutting through the orange silence introduces an element of threat, heightening the painting’s emotional ambiguity. Such duality invites viewers to reflect on the complexity of emotion in seemingly innocuous subjects. A related work was selected by curator Susan Michaels for the inaugural Cat Art Show LA in Los Angeles, where it, along with a companion portrait and a catfight scene, found new owners. The genesis of this image lies in an earlier red-ground study, one of many rapid explorations undertaken by the artist around 2015.
