In this portrait, the artist appears as a near-perverse criminal painstakingly depicted on the warm gray background. His face is heavily distorted in an expressionist manner, his nose is orange-red and his black beard looks aggressively dominating facial features. This is hardly dignifying self-portraiture, but rather a heavy criticism of oneself, tormented by life and showing the weaknesses of a poorly schooled character. These works were quite important for the artist dealing with his psychiatric problems. As Vincent van Gogh portrayed himself with a bandaged ear, Nicholaas Chiao portrayed himself as weakened and annihilated by psychiatric issues.
