This painting was directly influenced by the death of the artist's grandmother, and, to create a memorial for her, the artist depicted her as the gatekeeper of Death, wielding a scythe. The artist's grandmother's lifetime hobby was photography, and through her hands, family history was well preserved. She also maintained day-by-day records of the weather. Artists believe in the human possibility to defeat death; she is a symbol of a guarded area of nothingness with the possibility of uncovering death's secrets behind these gates.
