Artwork Description:
This painting unmistakably conveys the tragedy and hysteria of an older woman's broken existence. Continuing the exploration initiated in the 2012 piece The Hysteria, this work can be situated within a psychoanalytic framework, particularly drawing on Sigmund Freud's theories of grief and mourning. The emotional intensity is heightened by specific personal losses: the death of the artist's grandmother instilled a profound sense of nervousness and fear, exemplifying Freud's concept of the persistent role of the unconscious in processing loss. Additionally, a photograph of a woman from a religious chorus, captured while performing Christian songs, inspired this powerful expression and reflects the existential dimension of human confrontation with mortality, as discussed by theorists such as Ernest Becker. The artist believes in the possibility of humans even resurrecting the dead, an idea that resonates with Freud’s reflections on the desire to overcome loss and with existentialist notions of transcending mortality. Nevertheless, until such times, the fear of death persists as one of life's most dangerous and haunting experiences, underscoring both psychoanalytic and existential perspectives on human anxiety in the face of finitude.
