This monumental painting is a vivid metaphor for the sometimes conflicting relationships between the technologically progressive West and the more historical and traditional East. It depicts an attack of Western knights on the Eastern Man who becomes Death with a huge golden sword - a skeleton horse rider. This action is surrounded by the smoke of bamboo forest burning in the flames, and meadow. The dominant colors here - burnt and raw umber, with fresh accents of yellow, reds, and violet on the munitions of men of battle. The creamy-white horse of a Death Rider is a central accent to this composition.
